On a fantastically sunny weekend over 110 players set out on Saturday morning all with the hope of becoming the 2018 Orsett Club Champion. The scoring conditions were perfect as was the course presentation, yet again. The early pace was set by Joe Green with a level par 72 although bar a hiccup on his last hole could have been a sub 70 round. As the day progressed Joe’s score was matched by Zach Chegwidden, Jamie Benton and Cassidy Steffens, the only player to shoot under par was the defending champion, Danny Vaughan, a -2 under 70 saw him sit at the top of the leaderboard overnight. After the cut there were 36 players who made it through, the cut falling at 85. Everyone teed off in reverse order with all the action to come from the final 2 groups. The final group struggled to find any rhythm throughout the day and all 3 players faded away, the penultimate group of Zach, Joe & Harry Robson provided the fireworks. A steady round of 73 was posted by Harry whose total of +5 saw him finish 3rd. Zach was a couple shots clear stood on the 16th tee, only to take a double bogey there where Joe’s good play saw him finally draw level. Both players parred hole 17 and they stood on the 18th tee tied at +1 for the tournament. Both of the lads dispatched long, straight tee shots down the centre of the 18th, Joe’s wedge shot came to rest 10 feet, pin high high only for Zach to fire his wedge shot in to only 15 inches!! A great shot under the pressure. Joe’s putt slipped past on the right lip leaving Zach to tap in for a birdie and the win by 1 shot. It was great to see so many of the competitors had stayed to watch the conclusion of the event as well as the prize giving where Zach was joined by his family including Club Vice Captain, Dave. He was presented with the trophy by Club Captain, Kevin Lyons.
